CAMOTES ISLAND, CEBU via DANAO

Camotes is a destination where adventure begins the moment you stepped out of your house.  Getting there is such an adventure as you'll see lots of places before actually reaching the island and it won't hurt your pockets too.

To get the most of this journey, i suggest  you travel from Cebu City to Danao City, so you'll see the northern coastal towns of Cebu. Just take a bus ride at the Cebu North Terminal and look for a bus that goes to Danao City. You may also ride mini buses at the White Gold terminal.  Or if you want to bring a car then you can just go directly to Danao port as their Ro-ro ships will bring your cars to Camotes Island. But if you are so eager to embrace Camotes island then take the boat at the Ouano Wharf, Mandaue City so you won't have to travel for another hour or so.

I and my friends took the Danao route and had the adventure of our lives. We rode a mini bus at the White Gold terminal for a fare of less than P50.  From there you'll pass by Mandaue City and the coastal towns of Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela.

We finally reached Danao City.  Two shipping companies ply the route of Danao-Camotes, namely Jomalia Shipping and Shuttle Ferry but during that time Shuttle Ferry which was supposed to depart at 10 am was unable to embark because of some disputes, so we had to wait for the Jomalia ship at about 4pm.  We actually thought of taking on the smaller bancas but our nerves got the better of us.  So while waiting for almost 6 hours, we just toured Danao City by foot and by riding on "trisikad" or three-wheeled bikes.

We toured Gaisano mall...

We were able to find a gem in its century old church.

Finally we were able to leave for Camotes Island, Cebu.

It was already dark when we got there and we had to ride a "habal-habal" - a motorcycle where about 3 people ride on to get to the town of Tudela from the town of San Francisco, Camotes.  It was a very chilly night but the moon was so bright.  It was blissful nature in its rawest form as the lights only seen are the stars and the moon amidst the shadows of Camotes' gigantic trees - the night concealing the true splendor of Camotes just as yet.

Day came and slowly Camotes unraveled its enigmatic charm.
We headed to the mangroves after passing through some vegetation.

I've never been to a mangrove forest so it was a great thrill to be actually walking on the mangrove swamps.

It was a sight to behold.

Then we went to Bukilat Cave.

It was such a mystical experience.

It was low tide when we got there so we had more chance to explore the cave.

You won't see this everyday.

nor this ...

There were bats in there,

but not creepy as you might think.

We had to walk our way up to the road as our jeep could not climb uphill when filled with passengers. It literally was an adventure.

Then we traveled towards the town of Santiago - the tourist enclave of the Camotes island.

Oh it was a sight to behold - long stretch of white hues and blues over the horizon.

As we headed home back to Cebu City, Camotes just left us wanting for more.

See why. . .
